UC are doing millions of these checks, I went through one September 2023 and loads of others on the forum have been through one. They are to make sure your payments are correct from a financial perspective.
The standard request from them is ID & four months worth of bank statements for all bank accounts.
After you submit the information they are looking for, you will have a telephone interview.
You'll be asked a series of scripted questions about other potential sources of money, ISA's, PayPal, property, premium bonds etc.
Then questions about some of your banking transactions, which might not appear to make any sense (mine didn't).
I myself (as capital was over £6k on paper) was then asked to submit individual bank statement pages showing my Cost of Living payments.
I've seen others who were asked for PayPal account statements after the call.
Then I had a journal message saying my review was complete and my payments were correct.

Unfortunately you have to provide unredacted bank statements.
They do ask you to have the statements to hand for any questions they have.
If you genuinely don't remember then you'll have to give that as your answer.

The Independent Commissionaire’s Office (ICO) investigated my complaint about this. The ICO (who protect privacy) asked the DWP to consider redactions to protect privacy rights, the DWP agree to look into it. The DWP have recently denied to me in my journal that the ICO made any such recommendations to them. Gaslighting me of course. I’ve just put in another complaint to the DWP & ICO. The ICO told me today that they are now re investigating this again. The legislation the DWP are relying on to demand bank statements is PIP legislation for medical evidence, so it’s all unlawful. Everyone needs to complain. It’s the new post office scandal.

Have they sent you the right to be informed (Personal Information Charter) ngvan? They have to, otherwise it’s a breach of GDPR law.

I got exactly a same one but mine asked for 6 months worth of statements . As I am on long term sick leave, I accrued annual leave which I asked to be paid . UC were overly focused on that payment. I explained I’ve got nothing to hide as these payments were declared by HMRC anyway. They hyped things as if I stole their money . You’ve got nothing to worry about . Just be honest and say to them your business is in loss and have no income .

Where do those students live? Do you own a property that you don't currently live in?
