Claiming pip as a carer

The DWPs only reason for refusing me full mobility is not that I don't qualify due to my medical conditions but that I'm registered carer for my adult daughter who is also disabled. She requires mental health support ect. I don't do any physical care that would contradict my pip claim.

I have something rare similar to MS and struggling to walk. We go out in a taxi together, she is unable to go out alone. I write her pip and deal with other stuff like that with voice to text as I can't physically type anymore.

We have tried to get support from social services ect, but they don't help. Weeks and months of assessments and they said we should get help but then refuse to fund it. So we pay for cleaners, and other support out of pip. So I really need the pip. We do have equipment in the house so I no longer have to physically move her around. I used to before I started to get really poorly.

How can I deal with this (it's at tribunal) feels like they are purposefully neglecting disabled people and then when we survive, saying that we can't be that sick. But you can get full pip and work, so why not be a carer?

Hi @ThirtyOne, I'm really sorry you're having such a stressful time getting your PIP. While I don't know your full case, it does sound unfair for them to consider your caring as something that should be losing you mobility points considering your circumstances.

One thing I will say is that people often do have a better time at tribunal level. Many members have said they felt much more listened to by the tribunal panel and had better results than at mandatory reconsideration. So I hope that's the case for you too and things get turned around.

Have you had any professional advice while you've been dealing with your PIP case? Sometimes it can help to chat things through with an advisor to see if there's anything more that could be done to help you get the result you're hoping for.

Advicelocal have a directory that might be worth a look.

I really hope you get a good result soon, it can be so draining having to fight for what you need.
