I know I definitely owe money as mistakenly I was way over for a good few years. The last year waiting to hear has been really stressful but I am to anxious to ring them in case they say something bad.

Everyday I dread the postman but also feel disappointment that I haven't heard anything.

I hope you hear something soon. Is yours an over payment too?

Mine should technically be an underpayment if I've worked it out correctly. But I don't need or want it back. It was triggered because the amount had dropped when I moved to UC, compared to when I started ESA many years before. I couldn't call ESA to change the amount so just left it with a slight deduction over several years.

However, during that time I got several lump sums of backpayment and then the cost of living payments as well, so it became very difficult to work out exactly how much should be disregarded at any point, so I may have got the calculations slightly wrong. I have also bought a few items which they might deem as deprivation. So I wouldn't be surprised if there is some overpayment by the end of it. Just seems very odd not to hear anything at all.

I also don't really trust them to get the disregards correct for backpay and COL payments. I recently had to change my council tax after going through their savings threshold. I clearly wrote that the COL's should be disregarded in 3 different places for that…then when I got the updated the council tax bill I can see they've ignored the COL disregard so I've had to pay them a bit more than I should have done by my own calculations. I really don't care anymore though, money isn't of any use to me in the bank, I can't 'buy' anything that would improve my health or daily living situation, so it's not worth the hassle of trying to get it corrected.

To add to the stress I have now had a UC migration letter today.

How is this going to work if I owe lots of money?😢

Go ahead with the UC migration as normal. ESA will still be able to reclaim the overpayment after the migration.

It's much easier to update savings with UC if & when you need to do that in future. All done online in the journal with just a few clicks on the final day of your assessment period. 🙂
