Why is emotional health so critical?

Emotional Health week is an even arranged by The Centre for Emotional Health and is an opportunity to come together and raise awareness of the importance of our emotional health, including how to develop this, because it supports us through all the challenges life throws at us.

We often donโ€™t recognise the impact of stress or mental illness until it shows up in some from of physical symptom.

Our emotional wellbeing can have a huge toll on our overall wellbeing.

Sometimes we don't know how to talk about this, or feel shame about our symptoms, only seeking professional help once it shows up physically or we are in crisis.

How can I improve my emotional wellbeing?

Make sleep a priority - Try to sleep at the same time each night, limit the use of electronics and try something relaxing like a bath.

Exercise - Just 30 minutes of exercise such as walking can have a major impact on your emotional wellness.

Practice deep breathing to reduce stress - A short but effective exercise is to breathe in through your nose to a count of 4, hold for 1 second and then exhale through the mouth to a count of 5. Repeat.

Volunteer your time - Be it to friends and family or a cause that is close to your heart. It can help shift your thoughts to something else, and can give you a feeling of purpose.

Spend time with friends and family - Quality time with friends can remind you youโ€™re not alone, and help find ways to experience joy in life.

Take time to unplug - We live in a world full of technology which can be overwhelming, and too much social media has been linked to higher stress levels. Consider scheduling breaks, head in to nature or read a book to help you unwind and reconnect with your emotions.

Talk about your feelings - Talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Or if this isnโ€™t for you, try writing in a journal each day. Writing about your feelings each day may help you to better understand your emotions.

I hope youโ€™ve found the above tips as useful as I did. If you have any suggestions based on what works for you, please do share these.

And if you are struggling with your wellbeing, please reach out. ๐Ÿ’œ

I find writing a list of thing I'm grateful for in my life helpful when I'm feeling depressed.

I have been consistent with journaling since the new year and I have found that it definitely helps to see what I am feeling written down

Thank you for the tips. Will try and take on more exercise. Wanna do 2 miles a day but really struggling to go out. I feel so depressed. Wanna go out in nature and do more reading as well but I need to make time and sort my books out.

Especially important during winter months when we feel inclined to hibernate and move less..

Get out into nature as much as you can. Sitting near a stream, listening to the wind moving through the trees, seeing animals going about their important business, these are all healing and therapeutic. Just seeing green grass is good for you. Try to visit a park or ideally take a trip into the countryside.

HI, I'm very lucky and have an allotment. I find it very difficult to motivate myself but because I have six chickens I have to go every day. A quick chat with the girls and a bit of wheel barrowing wood chip really cheered me up after the dreaded pip renewal telephone meeting, yesterday. Watching a red kite swoop down and then seeing my resident Robin really helped. Hope you can all get your fill of nature soon.

Bless you @Amberpearl, glad you're doing ok. I often have broken sleep - very annoying isn't it! I know it's easier said than done, but try to find a distraction for a bit if you can. Maybe have a look at the tips in this post - see if there's anything that stands out to you. Or the Games on here.

Would having somebody with you for the call help? If so, POhWER Homepage might be able to provide some support.

If things get too overwhelming, please remember the details provided on the email I sent.

Please take care of yourself ๐Ÿ’›
