Council Tax

hi

Wondering if someone can advise me on this 🥴

I never had to pay anything towards council tax while on legacy benefits

But yet since moving to UC on managed migration I had no council tax to pay again

But I got a council tax bill in January for £200 I spoke to the department nothing has changed ?

Which they acknowledge and they don’t know why I’ve got the £200 bill

Now I’ve just received my bill for coming year ahead and it’s £500 I have to pay £50 over 10 months

Council tax say it’s to do with whatever uc

Have reported in my uc since January

Only thing that’s changed is I got my backdated TP well most of it in January from previous October

But this money is not supposed to be included when working out council tax

But it’s exactly the same for money I was receiving on LB

So it makes no sense ?

I was originally getting full CT reduction when I migrated over to UC in October

Can anyone shed some light on this 🥴

    Hi @Lainybear

I believe most councils run their own CTS schemes. Do a forum search for “council tax and UC” and you with find others who have been in same situation after migrating.
It’s possible you could get a discretionary payment from your own council, but this is usually for one year.
    sorry it’s not better news.

    Best wishes

    Hi @mix_dage

yeah it’s happened to my friends as well it seems although we are supposedly protected with TP

They are taking it off us another way 🥴

    We All get pip

    Standard allowance

    Carers element

    Housing element

    TP

    Thank you for replying 🥰

Some councils treat UC differently to legacy benefits, especially if you are getting TP because that takes your award over the usual maximum UC amounts.

    hi @Kimmy87

Yes this is exactly what’s happening it’s so unfair I’m almost

Thats weird but I know all councils works differently. I moved from LB to UC and my council tax is still paid in full for now anyway.

That said I've only had one payment of UC and TP was missing and added manually. So maybe this is an issue looming for me when all there systems start seeing everything.

    hi @peters77

    I hope it doesn’t happen 🥴

It was only when they sorted my TP out

I moved over in September and I had no TP element sorted till January and that’s when I got my CT bill 🤦‍♀️

Had same situation with back pay on benefits review they counted as savings I showed them letter from dwp and told them disregard for a year they sorted immediately but I have heard some councils do charge council tax email them and explain show picture of letter and bank statement when it in your account
