Does anyone have experience of submitting ill-health retirement forms to claim early retirement on poor health grounds?

    Thanks Janer1967 for your reply.

Maybe my question is too generic. Upon giving it some more thought, the situation is that I have received completed medical forms from my GP and a hospital consultant surgeon. However, they have completed the forms from a medical viewpoint. I am wondering if an additional private occupational health assessment would strengthen my application to address workplace issues that relate to my health conditions.

Usually there is a requirement for a oh assessment report which would outline any reasonable adjustments that could be made or if they feel there is no potential return to work in the future

Have a look on your pension providers website to see what their process is

Has this option been discussed with your employer ? This sort of solution should be prompted by them after long term absence or z condition that prevents you from working

To get ihr there had to be evidence to show that you will be unable to work again up to retirement age

It's a long process and not easy to be obtained

Morning @LJ1 welcome to our great group.
I am coming to the end of my process (hopefully)
With my early ill health retirement, i had two OH assessments, one with the companies own request and the other with my pension provider, has your work place HR helped you with explaining how the process works ?

Thanks Janer1967. Your responses are much appreciated. I am currently not employed in my pension providers work environment and do not have a HR department to liaise with.

From your post and another it appears that OH assessments are commonly required for Ill-health pension applications.

I have not been working in the work environment that relates to my pension for over 12 years. My recent health condition prevents me from returning to that work environment.

An OH assessment would appear to be beneficial to me. No doubt I can find businesses that provide OH services, however can anyone recommend who I might approach for a private OH assessment? And do the reports need to be produced by a medical practitioner that is registered with the General Medical Council?

Morning SueHeath. Thank you for your post. I am currently not in a workplace with a HR department. Since you had two OH assessments that confirms my thoughts on the need for one myself.

In that case you should be guided by what the pension provider requests as evidence

I had a small pension I was going to take on ill health and I was sent form to be completed by my gp that's all but this was only a pot worth £700

If they require a oh assessment or medical they will have their own third party they use so I would wait before paying private

Have you contacted your pension provider to discuss the process as its hard for us to advise as all providers gave diffetent process and criteria

Hi @LJ1 don't pay for your own OH assessment.
As Janer has said work with your pension company.

Thanks Janer1967, the pension providers written guidance on content to include appears to be quite poor and the form also doesn't appear to cater for my circumstances. However, I will contact the pension provider and see if they can provide me with some guidance.

I have gone through Ill Health Retirement - sucessfully, an amazing 3 times with 3 different employers - the first two were linked though !
The final time - I struggled due to OH not following the rules - and enlisted the help of a trades union
First get your GP on your side

    Hello,
I’m glad I came across this website and hope you dont mind me popping in on this post.
Can you please help me in understanding if receiving your pension is the only payment you would be expected to receive from your employer if you have to retire due to ill health?

    thank you 😊

Welcome to the community @hjohn :) It's great to have you with us!

I don't know too much about ill health retirement, but I'm sure someone will come along to advise you soon enough. In the meantime, you may find it helpful to read MoneyHelper's page on ill health retirement. Is this something you're considering?

Thank you Tori for your response. I have just under gone therapy for bone cancer and I am still currently bed bound.
I have been off work for nearly two years due to my illness. I have had meetings with my employer and have met with their OH.
While I was an inpatient having therapy in hospital last month, meetings where held in my absence and I have receive a letter stating I have been dismissed from work.
I did take my work place pension last year as I knew I would not be able to work again.
I have worked for the company for 15 years. Their letter states I am to receive outstanding holiday pay & 12 week notice pay.
I would like to know if this is correct.
I have requested a copy of my contract but they have failed to provide me with one, thank you

@HJohn yes that is correct that is the legal min you must be paid for medical dismissal.  Some employers pay a compensation payment buf there is no legal requirement to do so
