Motability claims on insurance advice

I am the appointee for my son who has ASD. He has had a Motability car that is coming to the end of its lease. Unfortunately during the lease we have made 5 claims , not all his fault and none of them for unsafe driving. He just seems to be really unlucky.
I have gone to reapply for his next vehicle and they have said that RSA Motability won’t insure him. They will insure me. I don’t know what to do. His car is his lifeline, he will lose all of his independence and things that we have worked hard to get to improve his wellbeing and give him purpose will he nearly impossible to access. I could cry. It will have a major detrimental effect on his mental health too.

I don`t know the ins and outs of all Motability (I`m still waiting for my 1st car to be available), but I would say if they will only insure you then all you can do is go with that.  At least your son will still have access to the car, even though he won`t be able to drive it.
You could always go down the more expensive path and not go with Motability; source a car for your son with the Mobility part of PIP (and all the other expense that goes with car ownership).

Unfortunately, RSA motability can refuse to continue to issue a disabled driving if they have too many insurance claims. This is because it then becomes too much of a risk to continue to insure that person. They often give a timescale of how long they will refuse to insure you for, have they said anything about that?
In the meantime i'm afraid there's nothing anyone can do about that. You can of course be a named driver and drive the car on his behalf, though i appreciate that this isn't the same.

It is! I`ve gone for a Ford Kuga - bit of a hefty up front payment, but I need a car big enough for myself plus 1 and all our gear (which includes a week`s worth of firewood) when we go away for a week.  The last I heard from the dealer is it "should" be available early February :)

That's a really lovely car and definitely one i would choose, if the payments weren't so much. I hope you enjoy it when it arrives, as i'm sure you will!

Hello @ktwag and thanks for posting, I'm so sorry to hear what's happened and can completely understand your worry. As Poppy mentioned, I'd be curious to know if a timescale was mentioned by Motability?

I know it's an expense, given everything the scheme covers- but have you asked about the possibility of buying his car at the end of it's lease?

I hope you don't mind me editing the title of your discussion, I've popped it into our transport and travel category, so it's easier for anyone in a similar situation to find this discussion, and to share their thoughts.

    Hi cartini,
With motability car, apart from advance payment, is there any other expenses to pay up front be getting the car?.

No, not unless you have any adaptions that need to be paid for. When you receive your vehicle all you pay for is fuel. PIP will then pay motability from your PIP/DLA payments.

    Hi poppy123456,
    Thank you for your response,
That's a relief and there's no adaptions to my car.

This thread is almost one year old and the member hasn't been active in that time. If you've had multiple insurance claims during your 3 year lease then yes they can refuse to insure you for your next lease.

Yes, you can appeal it but not sure how you do that because i can't seem to find any information with the new mobility insurance company Direct Line. The reason you were refused is because you're now classed as high rise because of the amount of claims you've made.

If it helps, I believe you are allowed to insure your own Motability car.

So you still get everything else included, like tax, tyres, servicing etc, but have to pay for the insurance.

I've never heard of motability allowing you to use any other insurance company but i can't find any information to suggest you can or can't. With motability everything is included with the cost and i don't know how they would calculate the payments if insurance wasn't included.

Would be interested to know if anyone else can find anything that says you can do this because it would help others.

I wonder if tax and insurance are being confused here?

Motability do allow you to pay the tax on a Motability vehicle.  That allows you to use the free tax exemption on a privately owned vehicle at the same time.

I haven't heard of Motability allowing people to pay their own insurance though.

The thing about motability is that it's usually a standard 4 weekly payment (mostly all of your mobility amount) and if you continue to claim from your insurance then costs to them will increase. It's not like any other insurance company where a claim could increase your premium the following year.

How many times did you claim on the insurance? Were they for accidents you had that were caused by you?
