Mental Health & Disabilities

Mental health is often left out of the disability conversation. Mental illness is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting 264 million people. Mental health conditions are a common by-product of living with other forms of disability. Mental health should be a crucial part of disability awareness, advocacy, and reform.

Mental health and disability are very interconnected, as people with disorders are mostly known for (having depression.) There is less awareness of mental health in our disabled community.

Living with a life-long condition such as Cerebral Palsy makes many people resilient & strong to the ups and downs in life. Life from an early stage has been a fight for accessibility, equipment & of course, the dreaded PIP assessments as examples.

It's no wonder that people with motor or physical disabilities may not recognise mental health issues because they are so busy on all other fronts.

We already know that men are less likely to refer to mental health services because there is an unconscious bias to be strong from a very early age.

We also know that many people have realised they may have had a mental health problem and have tried counselling via their GP. In most cases, it has not helped because the counsellor did not understand the special circumstances & differences in symptoms that may have contributed to mental health issues; this is crucial in counselling someone with CP.

“It's almost like a car driver being asked to fly a plane with no training or experience flying; just because it's driving does not mean it’s the same thing.”

If you have or have not tried mental health counselling via your GP, we can support you with Specialist Counselling with Therapists who also have CP.

We have male and female counsellors to make sure there is a choice. We have counsellors who support people who use communication devices & even have a male counsellor who is quadriplegic to ensure our counsellors can match you the best we can.

In most of the country, we seek & obtain NHS funding for our counselling, or people sometimes self-pay for an immediate start; it's up to the person and their finances.

If you would like to start the counselling journey to a better future, contact us or self-refer by using the links below, we are here to help.
