Yes but please be aware of the maximum earnings limit for carers allowance (£132/week)  and also carers allowance is also taxable income.
Did you use the benefits calculator to check entitlement to UC? I agree with calcotti that you could potentially be better off claiming this.

I will put in the numbers over the weekend and see what would work out best for us. May get back to you next week on the figures.

Sooner or later we will be moved on to UC - today's advice has been very useful. Thanks again.

If he is working 16 hours and being paid NMW he will be earning too much (16 x £9.50 = £153/week) to be eligible for (Carers Allowance £132/week limit). He will not have any NI deducted and also no income tax (unless he has a lot of taxable income from somewhere else) so unless he is paying something into a pension scheme he will exceed the CA limit. However only half of the pension deductions can be deducted so he would need to be paying £40/week to get him down to the threshold - that seems unlikely.

I guess he would have to be self employed and deduct expenses to meet this figure. Who on earth set the bar so low at £132.00 ?

Perhaps we won't be claiming this benefit - will use the calculator over the weekend.
