Are backdated payments disregarded for social care?

Hi,

I got a backdated payment for disability premium of > 23k. I currently live in supported accommodation and have to contribute some money for my care - which is paid directly to my local borough. I'm aware that the 23k is disregarded for the length of my ESA claim but does anyone know whether it will it also be disregarded for the residential care I am receiving? From what I have read online having savings over 23k means I will be paying the maximum amount.

If anyone is knowledgeable in this area I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

Hello @anonymous23412 and welcome to our online community, how are you doing?

I'm sorry your post didn't initially receive any replies. I'll be honest, this isn't a subject I'm over familiar with but this NHS webpage advises:
You will not be entitled to help with the cost of care from your local council if:
    • you have savings worth more than £23,250 – this is called the upper capital limit, or UCL, and will rise to £100,000 from October 2025
    • you own your own property (this only applies if you're moving into a care home)
You can ask your council for a financial assessment (means test) to check if you qualify for any help with costs.

    ...
Contact your local council about 3 months before you think your savings will drop to below the limit and ask them to reassess your finances.
    Does that help at all?

If anyone else can offer some wisdom or their experiences, it would be much appreciated  :)
