I would have a cuppa soup as a hot drink
But a nice home made soup with bits in - in a dish with some nice bread - i would call a soup -
The only time I've had a beverage with lumps in, is when the milk turned ... so a soup is a soup
-
Soup is definitely a meal. In my unimportant opinion

I always have soup in a mug, so can be classed as a beverage but it is also a food.

If you were in a restaurant & asked about their soups, I doubt they'd be offered in a mug. If you enquired about their beverages, this would usually be taken to mean something like tea, coffee or a non-alcoholic drink. The definition of soup is a liquid food; that for a beverage being something you drink, but not all soups are potable, or suitable for drinking, so I'd say, as far as common usage goes, soup is not a beverage.

Some really interesting views here and all are important
I always use a spoon with my mug of soup but I can see the argument it is a beverage, especially with cold soups and thinner broths.Hannah - She / Her
