Do you work part-time but want to be full-time? Do you hours or pay vary week-to-week? Are you on a temporary/casual contract? Do you feel you had limited choice when looking for a job?

If you answer 'yes' to any of these - we want to hear from you

The Work Foundation at Lancaster University has partnered with UNISON, the public service union, to explore the decisions people make about work and the choices available to them. This research aims to improve policy and practice to ensure everyone can access secure work that meets their needs.

We will be doing online focus groups in May, and we want to hear from people working in jobs that don't provide them with the hours, wages, or security they want.

Through our focus group discussions, we’re hoping to learn:

  • What’s important to you when looking for jobs?
  • How much choice did you feel you had in accepting your current job?
  • Are there any factors preventing you from looking for a different job or accessing the kind of work you want?

Focus groups will last 1.5 hours and take place online. You will receive a £35 shopping voucher redeemable at numerous retailers to thank you for your time.

To learn more about taking part, please contact Dr Olivia Gable at the Work Foundation:

Hi I have tried to use that link but have been unable to send a link their.
This is the post I will be sending.  If you wish to vet the post feel free or post it as it is once looked at.
      Good Morning Olivia.
I have read your post on the Scope Forum having been involved with disabled people both applying for work and as a Disabled person and the barriers that have to be removed to allow disabled people the chance to work along side others whether as ablebodied or othe rdisabled people.
Some times barriers that we have are only in the "eye of the beholder" and because of previous hear say, would put doubt into the disabled person as to is its worth the effort.
Others believe that they have to be better than their counterparts to prove a point.  All this including the barriers to remove a better relationship with the employer can be resolved by good or better education from Forums like ours or Champions as the DWP like to call them who are trained to assist Sick as well as Disabled and those who have not got a job or who have never had a job and have gone to college straight from school and are now finishing their last year in the course that they have taken.
The reason I say all this is because there is no barrier to working and certainly no barrier when it comes to being disabled and looking for work, as all this would be in the EMPLOYEES C V.
When writing a C V its about writing about you.  Writing what your targets are where you want to be in 5 or 10 Years time, and matching those targets with the skills and oportunity's available.
Because some one was employed as a labourer and now has back problems does not mean that's it, when you look at his C V and see that he enjoyed Design work and had submitted plans for small extentions to kitchens and bathrooms that had been excepted by the local council.
These skills can be brought forward and certification given with aview of going back to work at the office and submitting plans for other jobs that could be taken on by that company.
My poiunt being and even recently, that when looking at employment or benefits there is no real "go to person" PIP's do not help when looking for jobs and say go to your nearest Job Center and discuss it with them.  Yet I find this odd since all the people that they deal with are disabled so why have they not got a Champion dealing with getting back to work, CORRECTLY.  Not through the assessment system they have now since most Assessment companies score Zero for access to benefits and believe that all should be working anyway.  But never state how or where to look for work other that to pass the buck to someone else to deal with.
You can contact me through the forum or through my E Mail Address to set up if you want an innitial meeting to discuss this further if you so wish.
