Hi, my husband is on contribution based ESA and in the support gripe. He is under 58 and looking to take a lump sum from his pension of about £14k and have the rest in a monthly pension of £169 per month. I work full time so not claiming anything. Will this effect his ESA at all

Hello @Ebbwvale64 and a warm welcome to our online community, how are you keeping?

It's my understanding that contribution-based ESA will not be impacted by a lump sum as it isn't a means tested benefit. Please see Scope's webpage around Pension lump sums and benefits. Whilst, I couldn't reliably inform you about the impact of the monthly £169 so will leave that to our lovely members!

Just to let you know, I've tweaked the title of your thread and moved it to our Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) category to help others find it and respond more easily.

Wishing you both the very best for the future, take care.

@Cher_Scope is correct about the lump sum and it won't affect his ESA. Pensions of up to £85/week are ignored when claiming CB ESA, for every £1 over this amount the ESA will reduce by 50p/week.

A pension of £169/month this works out as £39/week so will be ignored. However, he still needs to report the changes to ESA so that they are aware that he's receiving a pension.

@poppy123456 and cher_scope thank you so much for replying. We are exhausted will all this claiming etc as never done it before. He’s been awarded LCWRA from 26th January and only just put in the support group. So underpaid for nearly 4 months and told today that’s it’s a 92 wait before added to the support group payment….what a load of rubbish. Thank you for the advice on the pension though so again thank you

You mentioned LCWRA which refers to Universal Credit. Can I just make sure that you’re not also claiming UC as well as his ESA?

When placed into the Support Group the extra money isn’t paid until the 14th week of your claim. This has been law since ESA began many years ago.
