How long did it take to get processed and show as taxed online?

My car is currently SORN as I've been unable to drive for a while.  It will need MOT soon and I hoped it could be collected by a garage while on SORN, but have been told that's not an option - at least for the local garages I've tried.

As the car is SORN, it will be taxed as soon as they process the forms, even if I've put the next months date on it.  So I'll lose a month of tax if they receive it too early.  But obviously don't want to leave it so late that it's not taxed in time for the MOT either.  Garages are currently booking MOT more than 2 weeks in advance so I can't wait until the tax is showing to book either.

The 50% tax reduction can only be done via post, it's not possible online unfortunately.  I've also had to order a cheque book to pay for it...haven't written a cheque in more than 10 years!!

So the question is, how long should I expect the V10 process to take, from the day of the post being collected, to the day of showing as taxed online?

Thanks

If the car currently has a valid MOT and insurance why not tax it as normal now and when you get the agreement that you only needed to pay 50% of the tax you can reclaim the unused months amount back.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think you've misunderstood the issue here.  I do have the PIP paperwork that allows me 50% off.  But if I tax it now, I'm just throwing money away while it sits unused on the driveway.

Ideally, I'd tax it on the 1st of June, and then SORN it again before the end of June.  But I need to know how long it takes for the post to get delivered and then processed at the DVLA.

It DVLA so it will vary. As it’s for MOT then I’m very surprised the garage have said they can’t collect it until it’s taxed.

You can drive a vehicle that’s on a SORN if you’re taking it to/from an MOT.

That only applies if the MOT has run out.  Technically you can't drive it home after an MOT pass without taxing it first either.  (Fine for online tax - but an impossibility using a postal tax service).  The laws around this do seem to be particularly awkward!

You get a refund  of the tax you pay for, when on standard mobility ,  or you have to send a cheque for the  amount  (50% ) of the cost, but i'm not sure if they would do monthly  refunds or 50% discounts  ,  If you need to tax it for just 1 month  then i think you would need to pay up front ,at the normal rate , then claim a refund for that and any other tax in that year, IT could take 2-3 weeks for them to process  a refund ETC
Sorry, but you're still missing the point here.

I can tax it at the 50% rate for 12 months using the V10 form by post.  I can SORN the car online again after the MOT.  I will then receive a cheque for the unused 11 months.

If DVLA receive the V10 form too early, the tax will be backdated to the start of this month, then when I SORN it, the refund will only be for 10 months.  1 months tax will be totally wasted - and I don't like to waste money unnecessarily.

All I want to know is when DVLA will actually tax the car compared to the date that I post the form.  I appreciate that it won't be a fixed date, as Poppy says it can vary, but I just wanted to know what others experiences had been lately...whether had been within 5 working days, or whether it took 2-3 weeks, for example.

The Best way is to wait until the 1st of June, tax it as normal at the post office, or set up a DD with the 1st instalment on 1st June or soon after,  Then before the end of the month  cancel the DD  and then  claim the 50% refund   If you bought tax at the PO  you could still cancel it and get a refund  before the end of the month, but you would have the same issue with timings  or find a garage who has off-road parking who will collect and return your car or book the MOT  and take the car yourself, as long as the MOT is booked in their diary  you are allowed  to drive to and from the testing centre regardless of it being SORN  Otherwise  how can you buy tax if the MOT is expired

As for when they will start the tax from,  can you not send them a covering letter  giving the date you want it to run from ,?  If  they receive  your v10 and letter  a week before the end of this month and process it  within 2 weeks, there is no reason i can see  why it wouldn't start from the 1st June, Have you rung them and explained what you want to do?  They may be able to do this over the phone
I'm currently housebound.  I can't get to the post office.  And I can't use telephones.  But thank you for the ableist suggestions.

I've explained the best way to do it above.  I've also explained that a private individual can only drive to MOT with a SORN if the MOT has run out.  I was hoping the rules may be different for traders but it seems they are not.

DVLA will only start tax from the next month if it is paid within the last two days of this month.  There is no way to change that on their system.
