Hello
my 12 year old has a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD, they are in mainstream school but also has a ehcp and attends extra provisions within school. My question is should a teacher tell my child that they can’t use their adhd and asd diagnosis as an excuse for certain behaviours? Should they have said it differently? I told the school in my child’s annual review yesterday that I wasn’t happy that a teacher said that to my child and I didn’t really get much of a response.

Hello @dannistar
I'm sorry your child had that said to them by their teacher. I agree it was badly worded and I'm sorry that you didn't get much of a response from the school. How does your child feel about the comment?1 -
She feels upset by it because at the time of expressing herself in a negative way she felt overwhelmed about a situation in class and she reacted to it. I don’t want her to suppress herself even more so than she does because she’s worried or anxious to then get told off.Thank you. I needed to hear it from someone that doesn’t know me that how I felt is valid.0

That's really poor - sorry to hear about this @dannistar. No such comment should be made, especially when your daughter's needs are recognised (and supposed to be supported). This shows the opposite approach to me.
What does the EHCP say should happen when your daughter is overwhelmed about a situation in class? I would be interested in hearing if the support that is supposed to be in place was followed (my guesses are no - otherwise she would have had support in coping with this!).
How you feel is valid and if there's anything we can do to help please don't hesitate to let us know. We are all here for you. How have things been more recently for your daughter? I'm guessing a little better now it is the summer holidays

it's a downright disgrace and you should make a formal complaint about the teacher's behaviour, the truth is if you don't they will do this to another child until it causes a situation with more serious consequences, we are not a complaining nation, but in this case, it needs to be stopped1

My daughter gets time out now if too overwhelmed and gets extra support since I told them I wasn’t happy.
