Wi-Fi boosters/extenders

Has anyone had one?

We struggle with getting Wi-Fi signal at the far end of the house, which is where my bedroom is, which is where I spend a lot of time on the computer. The signal is there and works, but there is a lot of high latency which I notice when playing games.

We are with EE and they want £10 a month for a booster, but it seems you can buy one for anything from £15 to £250+.

My Granny has a large bungalow and is with Virgin Media who charge £8 a month for the same booster service and it works perfectly.

Does anyone have any experiences? Especially with BT/EE, rather than Virgin. I'd rather pay a one-off price and then the hardware is mine to keep, but I am wondering whether it is better to keep it all in-house and just go with EE's service for £10 a month.

Thanks.

I do know that some boosters you can buy aren't compatible with certain broadband providers, because they like you to use their own routers and boosters. This is certainly the case with BT. I'm not sure about any other providers @66Mustang.
