If you could instantly learn a language, which would you choose?

My cousin's daughter goes to school in September.

She's actually going to the same secondary school I went to which makes me feel ancient! But, I was surprised to find they still only teach two languages and that they are still assigned randomly.

I definitely think a language should be taught, but when they want to learn a language, pass a certain year, it has to be the one they were assigned.

There are so many languages to learn and I'd kind of hoped that school's could have more choice or even given the student the chance to choose.

It got me thinking. Would I have taken to learning a language better if I wasn't forced to attend the class of the language assigned to me?

If I had the choice, and could learn a language instantly, I'd love to learn British Sign Language.

Which language would you choose?

    It would be BSL for me too. I have my level 1 in it but that was a few years ago and I haven't had the opportunity to keep it up so whilst I know the basics I think I need to start from the beginning again

    I'd like to be able to read Ancient Egyptian or Greek to help with historical research.  :)

    Japanese

    I like Japan, the culture, and their ethics and morals, and would like to live there, but wouldn't want to be one of those foreign travellers who expects non-English people to speak English for me.

    @66Mustang My friends are currently learning Japanese! They also would like to live there one day. Anywhere in particular you'd want to be in Japan?

    @Hannah_Scope I want to say probably in the countryside away from a city, but that is based on my experience of European cities...knowing the general good nature of Japanese people I think I'd be happy in a busy Japanese city as well!

    japan was on my list as well.for me itd have to be the kanji i learn as oposed to speaking as im non verbal.
     i only know a swear word,but from what suport staff have told me- technicaly there arent swear words in kanji? as the culture is traditionaly moree softly spoken against the use of that sort of... angry language?.
    so people use words that sound like them to represent swear words.

    i was taught makaton at 18,but because of my lifelong epilepsy ive lost all my my memory of what ive been taught apart from a couple of signs so i woud like to learn it again.ivr got acess to the entire database of makaton signs and pictorials but ill have to wait till ive been moved to the new service,staff dont care.

    so id like to know--- japanese kanji,makaton (which isnt technicaly a language but its a database of actions which is just saying almost the same thing) and the final one id like to learn woud be computer languages like PHP and kind of a language- unity graphics engine,so i coud make better games than what iahev done.
    id also use PHP, and others to produce a full AAC progame for people with speech and languae difficulys and id make it free with no adverts,plus i want it to go multi platform like on linux,freeBSD and so forth-thats been my dream foe years.

    I would have to say Spanish, I don't have a particular reasoning other than I spend quite a lot of time in Spain (due to the weather which really helps my conditions)!

    @rebel11 That made me laugh!

    A lot of people saying sign language and it starts that discussion again, on whether it should be taught in schools from a young age?

    @CATP

    If there are no swear words are they more prone to phrases of insult? I'm sorry the staff don't care where you are, have you got a date for moving?

    That sounds like an amazing dream! It always baffles me how far we have come with technology and yet how many limitations it can still have. Like you have said with cost, platform restrictions and adverts.

    I happen to enjoy anime quite a bit and would really love to speak Japanese.

    Regarding swear words and Japanese... I don't know any swears but I've watched enough anime to know how to say "idiot". Which is "baka" (bah-kah).

    Sign Language would also be up there for me.

    @OverlyAnxious You reminded me of javascript >:( grrr. I hate(d) javascript  :D Much prefer c# or even c++
    They/Them, however they are no wrong pronouns with me so whatever you feel most comfortable with
