Hi I wondered if anyone has any experience of the following or can provide any help or advice about where to turn to.
A friend of mine's husband has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness. He has been paying into an NHS Pension and when he passes away their adult child will be entitled to a dependent's pension under the terms of the pension scheme. However, the adult child currently receives a fairly substantial benefits package as they are in need of 24 hour round the clock care. If the adult child receives the pension payment this will disrupt the benefits package they receive, though the pension payment is not sufficient to cover the lost benefits. Has anyone ever come across this situation before and/or taken any steps to avoid this problem? The family were hoping that the pension payment could be paid into trust in case the dependant child needs it in the future but cannot get an answer on whether this is possible and would love any advice or to hear any experience anyone has of this kind of situation.

Hello @GR3751
Welcome to the community! I am so sorry to hear about your friends husband. Scope has a list of sources to help with grief and bereavement for when you feel it may be needed.
We also have a page on how pensions can effect benefits that I'd encourage you to read. But as you are also querying about a trust I would encourage you to reach out to Citizen's Advice for further information.0 -
if the amount is lump sum then they could get some support with house in rent cost and a carers payment
if you have sub standard savings if not they will lose entitlement.
