Why Self-employment works for me

I’m Vicki Wilson, I run my own Virtual Assistant business called Vicki Admin Fairy.
Let me tell you a little bit about my background. I was born with Quad CP, which affects my upper and lower limbs and I am unable to walk unaided. I have never let my disability get in the way of me doing anything that an able-bodied person would do.
I went to mainstream schools, college, and university. I gained 12 GCSE’s 3 A’levels and a BA (Hons) Degree in business management. After several years of trying to get into employment, I got a job in Administration within the HMRC. I worked for the HMRC for 20yrs until they closed our office and made us all redundant.
At the time of leaving the HMRC, Steve, my husband, was running his bookkeeping business, so between April 2020 and February 2021, I was helping him with his admin tasks in the bookkeeping business. While he was doing the technical side of bookkeeping, I would be behind the scenes making sure all the files and paperwork were in order, organising the huge number of emails coming in, sending invoices and contacting clients.
One day I just thought “I can do this for other people and small businesses, There is a lot of administration involved in being disabled today and perhaps I can use my skills to help”.
And Vicki – Admin Fairy was born, putting all my experience and years of working in administration to good use by removing the admin chaos for disabled people and small businesses, helping them regain their free time because I have done all the dreaded jobs for them that they would leave until an evening or a weekend.
I can help disabled people with any form of
administrative support, you don’t need to run your own business to have my help.
I can help you with producing documentation, typing up essays, diary and email
management, I can do your administration for PAs/contracts, direct payment
admin, and typing up letters of any kind (you can send it via voice note and then I
can type it up ready to be sent out). The list of things I can support with is almost endless.
In my experience, being self-employed has helped me so much, having cerebral palsy I need to do exercises regularly and practice my walking using my walking frame daily. Working full-time in an office with fixed hours was hard for me to fit everything in. It was 20 minutes there and back every day. It was tiring working a full day, then coming home and trying to fit in all my exercises. But being self-employed I have no commuting (my office is our spare bedroom) and I can work the hours I want and fit everything I need into the week. Also, it has freed up my time to get extra help from an osteopath.
