Boardgames

In the time of modern communications and online gaming, do many people still play boardgames on a regular basis? If
So what games?
I love a board game, but don't play as often as I want, but such is life. When I do pay it is generally Cludo (Downton Abbey version), Monopoly (Star Wars Version). Also when I fist met my partner and we started playing board games I went to the got a monopoly made for her that contained her favourite shops; the first hotel we stayed in and so on. Tge game is a story of our early few years together.
There's a boardgame cafe in Cambridge that I want to try. You turn up get a coffee and buy a piece of cake and then play a boardgame..... If you are on your own you just join in with someone else.
Anyway, who else plays boardgames and what ones.

I love Trivial Pursuit.....
Last time I played Scrabble I was accused of cheating.0 -
I'm a fan of the silly card games like Exploding Kittens, or Cards against humanity. But I'm always up for a game of Star Wars Monopoly.
There was a games café about ten mins from my old house, it always looked great fun, but it was too busy for my liking. A friend did weekly D&D sessions there.0 -
Albus_scope.... There are some boardgames that you can play remotely over the phone/email. Maybe we could look at getting one going here?????1

I'll speak to the boss on Tuesday and see what he thinks.0

I just thought that that it might be a way of keeping some people together who might otherwise be on their own.0

No it's a great idea @AndyGT, I just need to double check that we could do this. There's lots of laws and legalities we need to be very careful of. But I'll definitely be raising this idea asap.0

For me its monopoly nothing better then seeing the board go up In the air lol and many a few I've played, where a sore looser has done that.1

I'd say Monopoly, Cluedo, Scrabble & Risk.Cards against Humanity is hilarious, especially when we deal my cat a hand, & the things she comes out with, & often wins! Some words on the cards however I will just not say, so my family have acquired quite a few euphemisms.Anyone enjoy chess? My son came back from his honeymoon with a beautiful antique chess set. He & his wife had wandered into an antique shop, then went back the next day when the owner was there to find out the price. The owner challenged my son to a game of chess, saying if he won, he'd give my son this chess set. He never did find out it's price, so I must have taught my son well, as he gave it to me as a birthday present on his return. Sadly my son beats me too!0

I know what piece does what move in chess but I wouldn't say I know how to play it...1

I'm not sure if this is Cards against Humanity but I played a game once where you are presented with an answer and have to give the most offensive question for that answer, or might be the other way round.
I won it surprisingly as I am not into offending people but obviously have it in me to know how to!0 -
My husband and I play exploding kittens when we go to bingo. I love Cluedo and we have star wars monopoly. We also like to play table top games, Warhammer. we build paint and then war with the models.

Boardgames are certainly quite popular still, more now than 20 years ago I'd say. You can buy quite the range in Waterstones even now. Boardgame cafes are popping up in many cities.
I will say, many people who are very into boardgames are often into different and more complex boardgames than Cluedo and Monopoly (in fact Monopoly has a terrible reputation among boardgaming groups).
Catan is a good place to start. There are so many good boardgames out there that are much more fun than Monopoly.
Monopoly was originally a game about how terrible land-owning and landlords were.0 -
We play Articulate and Trivial Pursuit every Christmas! I also put together a quiz now and then for family and for girls night.0

I couldn't get use to Catan. If you want to go far enough back as a child I use love Frustration and Mousetrap..
I can remember one Christmas my parents bought me a game called 'Escape from Colditz'
It may not be the most expensive game but I loved it and I made Dad play all Christmas morning only stopping for lunch. Then a couple of years ago I saw the same game for sale on ebay and bought it... but can't find anyone that wants to play. Oh well, maybe one day.

I've not played board games for a long time not really got anyone about to play against. I always liked monopoly but I've always wanted to learn how to play chess.0

Chess is fun. There are a lot of online chess communities. The most popular I guess is chess.com but there's other's like lichess.com. Always nicer to play against someone you know/someone in person but if I ever get the itch to play some chess I go online. Lot's of nice tutorials and lessons online too.0
