For a join uc claim do we both need to cancel the claim? Or can it just be one of us who cancels the claim?

What's the reason for you wanting to close the claim, if you don't mind me asking?
I would appreciate it if members wouldn't tag me please. I have all notifcations turned off and wouldn't want a member thinking i'm being rude by not replying.
If i see a question that i know the answer to i will try my best to help.

Then you will both need to log into your journals to request your claim to be closed. Click "home" at the bottom of there on the right hand side it will say "request to close your claim"

If it's because either of you are now working then please remember that people claim UC and work, it doesn't mean there's no longer no entitlement to UC. If your claim is reduced to zero because of earnings it will remain open for 6 months.
