Child dla parent Esa carers allowance

Hi,

my son has just been awarded dla, I claim Esa and pip. Does anyone know if I am able to claim carers allowance? I have had a look online and it says while it’s an overlapping benefit I may be able to get a carers premium on my Esa claim but I am unsure what this means and how I would go about claiming it if I am entitled. Any help would be great

many thanks

Jade

The overlapping benefit rules applies to those claiming either contributions based or New style ESA. If your ESA is Income Related they do not apply.

To claim carers allowance your son must have been awarded either mid/high rate care.

Are you claiming child tax credits as well? If so then you will need to report the changes to them and your Tax credits will include the disabled child element. How much extra this will be will depend on what DLA award they have. It will be more if it’s high rate care DLA.
I would appreciate it if members wouldn't tag me please. I have all notifcations turned off and wouldn't want a member thinking i'm being rude by not replying.
If i see a question that i know the answer to i will try my best to help.

    Hi poppy,

    Thank you for your reply.

He’s been awarded middle care and lower mobility. I didn’t know that about tax credit so I will contact them.

I get contributions based. I saw online if I claim carers allowance even if I’m not awarded it because of overlapping I may be able to get some sort of premium on my own Esa payment.  I’m on old style Esa but it’s all a bit confusing. Thank you for your help

Even for the underlying entitlement you still need to claim the carers allowance. Whether you’re entitled to the carers premium will depend on your circumstances.
