Need an accessible bike

Hello, I am looking to source a bike suitable for a child who does not have any fingers to grip handlebars or pull brake leavers. Struggling to find a supplier that offers a solution, so any advice would be appreciated!

Hi @alicetaylor, sorry nobody has been able to help so far. How are you getting on with finding a bike?

I'm afraid I don't have much experience with this one, but one thing that might perhaps be worth looking into is the kind of bike where the breaks are triggered by pedaling backwards. I think they're called 'coaster brake' bikes. Would that be suitable for the child in question?

Hi @Rosie_Scope - thank you for your message. I have had some suggestions and leads elsewhere - no solution yet but definite progress and more areas to research.

I have been looking into coaster brake bikes and do definitely think this could be a good option. The trouble I am having is that they mostly seem to be on bikes for younger children and we need it on a bike for a 10 year old, but it is certainly an option we are exploring!

It's a tough one! But I hope something comes up soon. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you and let you know if I see anything else that might be helpful.

Would a trike not be easier /safer than 2 wheels?
You can get adult trikes by the way

The child has specified that they would like a two-wheel bike if possible so trying to explore all 2 wheel options initially.

Hi @Hannah_Scope, we have had to put a pause on the project for now whilst the child we are helping recovers from surgery, but we have found an engineer who has adapted bikes to make them accessible who is hopefully going to be able to help us, so things are looking positive!

That sounds great @alicetaylor :) hope their recovery is going well and the engineer is able to help them get biking soon!
