Income related ESA & state pension

Asking on behalf of a friend who currently is in receipt of income related ESA (as well as ADP)

He’s received a letter stating that his ESA will be cut to £129.50 from his 66th birthday in 2024.

Is this correct.  We were always led to believe that ESA was stopped when you turn pension age?

Thanks.

If he's the main claimant of the ESA then no that's not correct. ESA ends once you reach state pension age. He will need to claim his state pension, usually a few months before.

If he's claiming ESA with a partner and they are the main claimant then yes this is correct if part of the ESA is contributions based. Can you please confirm if he's the main claimant?

Edit to add, is this the same friend as your other thread?

He is the only claimant.  Lives alone.

He has applied for the state pension.

Sounds like another one of those ESA letters that make a whole lots of sense... not. :D I can confirm that his total ESA claim will end the day before he reaches 66.

    Thats what i thought…

It clearly states on the letter, ‘reason for change’

    ‘’- change of age’’

    🤪🤯
