Hi,

If my aunty gets old style basic state pension and pension credit to top it up, is she also entitled to a disability premium too and will this be paid in her pension credit then deducted from her state pension?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Nothing will be deducted from her state pension. To be entitled to SDP she must either be claiming a qualifying disability benefit such as PIP/ADP daily living, DLA mid/high rate care or AA. Or be registered blind.

She must also live alone or be treated as living alone and no one must be claiming either carers allowance or carers element of Universal Credit for looking after her.

Hi again Poppy, thank you so much for your reply.

She's been on her own since March 2021 when all her benefits changed after her husband died, and no one claims carers for her either.

She's been on PIP since 2018 and was getting SDP while her husband was living but it was never added to her Pension after he died.

Should hers be backdated to March 2021?

    Thanks Poppy 🙂

Do you mean she wasn't claiming SDP when her husband was alive?

If her PIP includes the daily living part then yes she will be entitled to it, if she lives alone. If living with other adults they must all be either claiming a qualifying disability benefit or registered blind.

She needs to contact Pension Credit to claim it.

    Hi Poppy,

They both received iSDP when her husband was alive but after he passed the only thing she got was basic pension and pension credit guarantee credit.
Will this be SDP? Or does it have to be actually say SDP on her letters?

    Thanks 🙂

Guaranteed Pension Credit isn't the SDP. For those claiming PC the SDP is actually known as SDA and should be included in the calculation of pension credit. She will need to check the breakdown of a recent letter to see what's included. Before the benefits increase this would have been £76.40/week. From 8th April it increased to £81.50/week.
