I have started receiving Universal Credit Housing Benefit (1st payment 14th May) and I believe there is a chance I could receive 1 month backpay and was wondering what reasons might enitle me to receive 1 month backpay?

For the avoidance of doubt your rent will be paid through UC known as housing element. You will only be claiming housing benefit if you’re living in either supported or temporary housing. Housing benefit and housing element are different benefits.
UC can only be backdated for 1 month in the most extreme circumstances. It will depend on the reasons why you didn’t make the claim 1 month earlier than you actually did. See link
