    Honestly I don’t know

Reading the details of what happens during a ‘wash up’ - its kind of a rush to the finish line in terms of legislation still in commons/lords (occasionally new legislation will try to be completed beginning to end in a matter of days but that would only be 1-2 bills max……..if at all)

How I understand it is not all existing legislation that is still currently in the commons or lords will make it to the finishline (I think a new government gets a clean slate - no old/incomplete legislation to deal with) but thoses that do get to royal assent will be pushed their at breakneck speed

It’s kind of all or nothing

there may be members who know more about this ‘washup’ process (I only knew of its existence the past couple of hours and I’m still reading all the info I found on it that I’ve posted links to)

to go back to a comment on another thread - instead of people posting questions (that can be easily answered via an interest search or reading a new article throughly) for members like poppy having to give the same answer over and over again - take time reading our explanations and/or links and try spending a bit of time doing research legwork yourself

We are happy to offer 2nd opinions and personal interpretations and to help explain things in a more understandable way if needed but please take the time to do your own reading before doing so

an update From the guardian live text:

    https://metro.co.uk/2024/05/23/five-key-bills-risk-falling-arent-passed-general-election-20894490/

there are currently 215 bills in the commons/lords that have not reached royal assent (basically adding to spec that this election is totally out of the blue and sunak/cchq just can’t be bothered anymore - want to leave labour a mess if they get in)

I’m looking out for the data protection bill in further details of the ‘wash-up’ but it may be positive news *touch wood

    surprised the
smoking ban bill looks like it’s been abandoned as that had cross party support and would be a half decent (if somewhat controlling) legacy for sunak to leave with

The bills still in commons/lords (or planned to be introduced to commons as I’m not convinced all these bills have had at least a first reading - more they were on sunaks to do list) that would affect the disabled community (going by the titles only - I have no clue of the contents of each bill) if rushed through in the wash-up are:

    • Assistance Dogs and Pavement Parking Bill
    • Autism (early identification) Bill
    • Benefit Sanctions (Warnings) Bill
    • Bullying and Respect at Work Bill
    • Carers and Care Workers Bill
    • Commercial Organisations and Public Authorities Duty (Human Rights and Environment) Bill [HL]
    • Data Protection and Digital Information Bill
    • Deductions from Universal Credit (Report) Bill
    • Disability Benefit Assessments (Recording) Bill
    • Employment Equality (Insurance etc) Bill
    • Evictions (Universal Credit) Bill
    • Food Poverty Strategy Bill
    • Health and Equality Acts (Amendment) Bill
    • Health and Safety at Work Bill
    • Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 (Amendment) Bill
    • Ministry for Poverty Prevention Bill [HL]
    • Neurodivergent Conditions (Screening and Teacher Training) Bill
    • Pensions (Special Rules for End of Life) Bill
    • Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Protected Characteristics) Bill
    • Renters (Reform) Bill
    • Social Energy Tariff (No. 2) Bill
    • Standards in Public Life (Codes of Conduct) Bill
    • Universal Credit Sanctions (Zero Hours Contracts) Bill
    • Unpaid Trial Work Periods (Prohibition) Bill
    • Welfare Benefits (Adequacy, Debt and Deductions) Bill
    • Wheelchair Access Bill [HL]
    • Workers (Rights and Definition) Bill

For better or for worse, early signs suggest that most of the above bills will get abandoned or shelved if if they win the election labour will be be starting at square 1

However we are still waiting for details to be confirmed

    update from bbc news

    basically it’s squeaky bum time

I think that’s my cue to take an extended break from the scope forum

If anyone needs to ask me anything feel free to pm me

My impression of the Digital Information bill is that the Lords are unhappy about the monitoring powers clause and the justification for it. So it is possible that dropping those clauses will be the cost of getting the bill passed. It was always ridiculous to put them into that bill anyway - it was designed to target other things, and those other things have been delayed by this last minute insertion that's created so much controversy.

    We'll see what happens.

No, I think I need to put myself in a timeout

I’ve been finding I have less patience as I get older - regardless of whether you are left or right wing leaning I’m finding you are having to tiptoe round so much (and it’s next to impossible to have a viewpoint that doesn’t offend someone…….and ppl are much easier to offend now then 10-20 yrs ago imo) - as an autistic person i find the attempts to self edit exhausting that im finding myself hiding from society more and more - it sucks that i have to do the same on a disability forum.

before i take my leave - im 90% sure the data protection (aka dwp bank surveillance) has been canned and won’t make it to the wash up (the wash up ends tomorrow i think) - a labour or tory gov after the general election could revisit it after the general election (though they’d have to submit a new bill from the beginning)

But for now dwp bank surveillance proposals look like they’ve been binned

I know I risk being accused of scaremongering here and I’ll post receipts so people can form their own interpretations

but it does sound like labours ‘back to work’ is a sign of ‘as you were’ in terms of labours plan for the disabled (I mean the tories already have a policy called ‘back to work’ up and running - it’s like looking in a mirror)

I am still trying to find any in-depth Labour docs with the finer detail to hopefully differ it to the Tory cruel plans (and I know that as a lot of you are praying that things will get better I really don’t want to dash hope and I want to find legit straws to clutch for you guys, I really do)

But the language Labour are using to announce this is very inflammatory and may as well of come from the Tory twitter feed

i know many of you are voting Labour to make sure the tories go and don’t want to risk the protest vote - however do double check that Labour are the strategic vote in your area and the snp/lib dems/greens aren’t better placed to take on the tories (esp with the Diane abbot fiasco complicating things where other minority groups are concerned……I really do think the anti Tory/Labour vote will happen in a few seats) - do what’s best for you

one thing I noticed from the announcement is labour says currently 75% of working age are in work and they want to get it up to 80%

That means that in terms of totally unemployed people on welfare benefits Labour wants to get 1 in 5 (20%) of that group into work

    a few more details:

    https://dailybusinessgroup.co.uk/2024/06/starmer-wants-more-in-work-and-cut-in-benefits-bill/amp/

honestly I’m ready to cry because even though I expected it, I was deep down hoping I was wrong and could type up some humble pie on the topic

Disabled community need to get loud and mad and make it clear that Labour won’t get far if they cancel Tory disabled ideology (they got the BAME community questioning their vote - even if you still intend to vote Labour if one knocks on your front door you should be interrogating them to the max)

side note - has anyone received any party leaflets through their letterbox yet (I haven’t got a single one yet which seems odd)

As Rachel Reeves said 15 years ago I think that Labour will be tougher on benefits than the Tories. Unfortunately I’m just waiting for a similar utterance.

too be fair that was 15 years ago and ppl can change their point of view a lot in that time (though not sure reeves has but I imagine starmer has final say on all policies)

I know scope has to stay impartial but I don’t think outside members need to be - but once again I say there are other voting opinions outside of Tory and Labour - if more ppl opened their eyes to the opportunity this election gives its not only voting the lessor of 2 evils)

A few years back macron got voted as French president under a newly formed parties, 14 years ago the Lib Dem’s 57 seats got them in the position to help form a coalition government.

It’s possible to upset the 2 party apple cart and mix things up if enough are brave (or just conclude to throw it at the wind)

I am terribly naïve about politics but I do worry that voting any other party than Labour will split a really important vote ? If millions vote say the Libs wont that take away the only chance we have to get Sunak out ? I am truly counting on Labour to at least be a bit more humane but who knows, we just dont at this time,

ah its just about who can dangle the carrot on a long enough piece of string to get the voters vote then when in power they cut it and say we have looked at all available information again and we cant do this and that like i have always said this country needs to stop and think before casting there x marks the spot of our future or lack of it

I just know that the Tories need to be gone, so living in a Tory stronghold, I'll be voting tactically.

I am not a fan of Starmer but that can be worked on later.

I'm fairly sure we'll end up with a hung parliament. The Lib Dems could form a coalition with Labour if that happens.
