UC advice.

Hello, I apologise for repeating myself but I just need some advice on roughly how much I would get on UC with a part time job.

I would get the LWCRA and transitional protection as I'm on income related ESA and in the support group, I'm single and over 29, my rent is: £550.02 per month through social housing, and my wage would roughly be: £575 (not sure the payment frequency until tomorrow but... am worried that I won't be entitled to any UC at all).

Please can someone give me some advice as due to my autism its daunting and I'm confused.

Poppy and everyone is amazing and very kind so. :)

Thank you.

As you're still claiming ESA you can do permitted work because those earnings would be less than £183.50/week, which is the maximum you can earn for permitted work. You must also make sure that you work for less than 16 hours per week. 16 hours or more per week would mean your ESA will end.

Permitted work earnings are ignored and you will still receive your current benefits. See link. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/employment-and-support-allowance-permitted-work-form/permitted-work-factsheet You need to ring ESA and tell them and ask them to send you the PW1 form. You will need to fill that in and return it.

Thank you Poppy, you've always been very helpful.. I know this is a bit of an ask but would it be possible if you could help me with any calculations when I do get migrated for UC... the whole work allowance thing is confusing and I am trying to figure out the payment frequency of my wages just for the future. I'm not 100% if I would be eligible for UC if I am working but I would need UC for my rent and obviously the transitional protection and LWCRA.

Thanks for your patience, you seriously are a life safer to many people on this website. 🫶🏻

You're welcome. I will explain the work allowance to you and hopefully you will be able to understand. If you claimed UC now then because you claim for help with the rent your work allowance will be £404 per month. This means you can receive that amount of earnings each month before any deductions take place. For every £1 over that your UC would reduce by 55p.

For earnings of £575/month - £404 for work allowance = £171 which is what will be used to work out your deductions. 0.55 x £171 = £94.05 deduction for UC.

If your ESA includes the SDP (can't remember if it does) then I'm reluctant to give a calculation for a UC claim due to Transitional Protection, which you'll be entitled if you're worse off when you migrate across.

All I can tell you is that with earnings of £575/month you will definitely still be entitled to UC. I hope this helps.

Thank you Poppy that is very helpful, would my rent still exist on the UC Housing Element? I think what I am confused about with UC is my friend who isn't in the LWCRA or claims housing and is under 29 and single, he only got £7 entitlement to UC as he earned £559 in one month, so I was panicking that I wouldn't be eligible or entitled to UC at all. 😂

The autistic brain is a pain sometimes but thank you for your time. 🫶🏻

You're welcome. You would still be entitled to the standard allowance, LCWRA element, housing element and maybe TP (depending on circumstances when you claim). Add all those together is what your maximum UC entitlement would be. Then the earnings deduction would reduce that maximum entitlement. You will have your earnings on top of that too.

If your friend isn't responsible for a child and they don't have LCW then they won't have the work allowance. This would mean all of their earnings would reduce their UC by 55%. There would be no earnings disregard for them.

Thank you Poppy, I am waiting to be migrated over to UC as that's the best possible result for my situation so I can get the transitional protection if that makes sense.. the whole UC thing is confusing and with the sounds of a general election on the 4th July, things could possibly change.

Does your ESA include the SDP? Sorry but I can't remember.

Hi Poppy, yes I do have the SDP. :)
