Hey there @robertsal4321 and welcome to the community.
It's quite normal for employers to ask for fit notes if you've been off for any length of time. It'd be best if you try and get a GPs appointment and explain the situation, I'm sure they'll be able to give you the note you need.

Hi
Can I ask how long you have been off work for?. Unless things have changed I believe that you are duty bound to provide your employer with fit notes for any period of sick of 7 days (including weekends) or more. Your employers absence management policy will tell you the specifics regarding going sick and your obligations.
If you have been off longer than 7 days then the fit note goes both ways and is an assurance to your employer that you are able to return to the place of work safely….Your employer has a duty of care towards you and to the business so asking for a fit note stating that you are fit to return to work is entirely normal and would be expected. Is the employer just covering their back…Yes they are and you cannot argue against that really.
If you have been off for longer than 4 weeks you would likely be managed under long term sick policy, which would likely mean having OH referral.
Employers are not duty bound to allow you to return to work if they have concerns about you ,without a fit note stating you are ok.
Getting backdated fit notes will be different for every GP practice, some will need a doctor to see you, some will maybe do a phone consultation and others will provide one having passed on your details and issues and subsequently having been reviewed by a doctor.
Best thing to do is phone GP practice and they will be able to advise.
