As just one example, twice this week there have been stories about pensioners homeless because of high rents

https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jun/18/state-pension-rent-how-one-man-became-homeless-britain

This story is presumably supposed to horrify and terrify, while I sit back thinking So? All pensioners are eligiible for Housing Benefit, unless they;ve got 16K plus in savings. My pension is £75 more than my rent. HB pays 80% of my rent. HB is unmentioned in the article and so any reason the man might not be eligible is unmentioned.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8002dk9nxqo

Another story with no mention whatever of HB,

I expect we've all seen the articles yammering about changes to PIP which are simply clickbait. Usually in about paragraph 5 they bother to mention these haven't happened, are not scheduled to happen have to be considered by the future government and debated in Parliament,

I'm happy to believe Tories want to frighten people but I don't think the authors of these articles want to do that. They're just ignorant, lazy.and sometimes thick too.

Not all those of state pension age are entitled to housing benefit. Mixed aged couples may not be entitled because it depends on their circumstances before they reached that age. Some need to claim Universal Credit as a mixed aged couple and this is much less generous because state pension is deducted in full, same as any other pension they maybe receiving. There are some mixed ages couples that are not entitled to UC.

For those claiming Pension Credit they will be entitled to maximum Housing benefit and council Tax reduction. For pension credit there's no upper savings limit, it's £10,000 and for every £500 over that amount the PC is reduced by £1/week.

Still blushing There's a word for what I just did, sound off about others' mistakes and screw up myself. Here's a nice soothing thought I can't get wrong.
