I have recently been diagnosed with neuropathy in my legs and feet , carpal tunnel syndrome in my hands and cataracts in both eyes .Complications from being type 1 diabetic all my life . I am no longer able to work my doctor has been given me fit notes since march to give to my employer for ssp pay .

My question is how long shall I keep calming sick pay for as I am not going to be able to go back to work now , and would I get pip if I make a calm as I have been given a diagnosis now and have plenty of medical evidence.
I have worked all my life so not sure what to do and I’m 44 years old

Hey there @mariasweetie welcome to the community. 😊

I can't advise on the ssp issue, but I can give some information on PIP. PIP isn't given due to any diagnosis unless it means you have 12 months to live, it's usually based on how your illnesses affect you on a day to day basis. So if you're struggling, it could be worth applying.

SSP is paid for 28 weeks by your employer. Even after that time I'd advise you not to hand in your notice until you get some expert advice. ACAS are usually good with this sort of advice. https://www.acas.org.uk/contact

You could also use a benefits calculator to check entitlement to Universal Credit. If you live with a partner you'll need to claim as a couple. If you have savings/capital of more than £16,000 you're excluded from claiming.

Thank you for the advice much appreciated I have calmed ssp sick pay for 3 months now and have made a calm for pip now . My neuropathy condition over time has gotten worse especially in my feet not being able to stand to long because of pain and numbness. I can’t feel the ground under my feet at the top of my foot I can feel on my heels but because of the all the pressure I put on them I have fallen and lost my balance many times. I can’t walk now and can only stand up for maybe 30 seconds I have to book ambulances to take me to my appointments. I have carpal tunnel in my hands so my grip is poor dropping things and my vision is blurry from cataracts . My daughter is 14 and is having to do a lot to help me now such as watching and dressing . I can’t get upstairs in my house so my bed is now downstairs in my living room with a camode next to me .
