Hi,

I claim ESA and am in the support group, and do 7 hrs a week permitted work. I have been off work for 7 days and my Employer has now asked me for a sick note from my GP, do I need to provide one for Permitted Work, as won't be claiming any Sick Pay? And I hope to be back at work next week.

Thanks for your advice.

Not entirely sure about the ins and outs of your situation with regards the support group but generally any employer is entitled to ask for a fit note for any periods of sick absence over 7 days including weekends. If under the seven day timescale then it would be classed as self certification, I.e. you have informed your workplace that you will not be attending work due too ???

You also mention hopefully being back to work, you haven’t stated that you will be back so two completely different things from an employers point of view.

Fit notes are they to keep you in work or help return you to work and is a way for employers to manage their records in respect of their employees and keep everything above board in respect of sick pay entitlement etc.

Hi @Snowie, welcome to our community 😊 As Bydand mentions there are several reasons why an employer may request a GPs note. Was it a temporary illness that you saw a GP for? Or is it regarding your disability? I know with my Crohn's disease for example a flare could knock me out for over a week, but I wouldn't go see a GP because there would be nothing the GP could do. I instead showed evidence of my diagnosis and that it could cause issues lasting a week.
