New UC claim. Disability element
My son is 18. I accompanied him to the first jobcentre appointment as I am his DWP appointee.
I then received a phone call from a work coach. Told the coach that he has PIP and she said he won't have to do jobsearches. They will just call me sometimes to check how he's doing. Does this mean he's been placed in a category? Are there different categories for not having to look for work at all and also for a limited expectancy?

It means that the work coach has turned off commitments while he waits for a decision on the work capability assessment. It doesn't mean he's been placed into a group yet.
You will need to make sure you continue to provide fit notes without any gaps until a decision is made on his WCA.
He will be referred usually from day 29 (sometimes later) of his claim. Once this happens you will receive a letter on his journal telling you he's been referred and a few days later you will receive the UC50 form in the post. You will need to make sure you fill that in and return it.

The advisor said he didn't need to get fit notes

That's shocking advice and will affect when the extra money is paid from if he's found to have LCWRA.
I'm assuming you reported his health condition when you first claimed for him? If so then it should have prompted an action on his "to do list" to provide a fit note.
I"d advise you to get that fit note as soon as possible and then log into his journal and report it.

Hi @Ikonik, as Poppy says I would get a fit note in as soon as possible. Since LCWRA payments are based around when a fit note was received.
Let us know how it goes with this work coach.
