It's Colouring Book Day! ππππ§‘π

Todayβs the day to celebrate the wonderful pastime of colouring π
The first popular colouring book is thought to be 'The Little Folks Painting Book' by George Weatherly and Kate Greenaway from 1879. Paint was used for early colouring books until Crayola made their colourful crayons in 1903.
Do you remember the boom in popularity of colouring books in the early 2010s? They were everywhere! This was because mindfulness became a hot topic and colouring was seen to be beneficial for this. Were you a part of this boom? I was π
There are so many different types of colouring books nowadays, weβre spoilt for choice. An interesting one I found was a βReverse Colouring Bookβ where the colours are already there, and you add the lines. Has anyone done one before?
Colouring even has some benefits π
- Improves focus
- Stimulates creativity
- Can help with anxiety and stress
It's certainly helped me focus on something when I've had a tough day.
So, share your favourite colours, your own colouring creations, and tell us what kind of pictures inspire you π
In a world full of colours, be a rainbow π

So this has prompted me to look for a new book. I've found 3 different onesβ¦
I think I'm leaning more towards the Food and Snacks one as it has food, yum, and the pictures aren't too detailed for my shaky hands!
Which one would you choose?

Just after my dad came home from the war in 1946 he worked for a stationers briefly. He sold colouring books, and the firm told him, when they complain about the same old pictures just tell them "there are no new colouring books just new children". How correct were they. π

That's a lovely story @vikingqueen π I don't think children will ever get bored of colouring books. It's such a fun and relaxing activity.
Do you colour?

I don't @Rachel_Scope, not very good with my hands. I still buy books for the youngest grandchild, but at 6 she's nearly grown out of it. It's all mobile phones these days π

Mine is called "Calm the F⦠Down"
It was a present from Santa (honest)

I've not tried colouring much before, but I've been having a go recently. I've got a Roald Dahl themed one, it's not Quentin Blake's original drawings it's just all sorts of pictures inspired by his books.
I got it to try and stop me scrolling through random stuff for hours when I'm resting or watching TV. I'm no good at staying between the lines, but it doesn't matter to me, keeps me busy for a bit! π
I vote for the foody book!

I second Rosie's vote.
Those 'relaxing' patterns look pretty wild to me and the fractals book would probably need messy paint - I would get paint everywhere I mean π

@vikingqueen you can get colouring apps now too! Not as good as a book but maybe your granddaughter might be interested as it's on a screen π
@Rosie_Scope That sounds great! I bet there are some very interesting pictures in it.
@WhatThe Seems we all agree with the food book. Yeah the relaxing patterns seem pretty stressful! I'd be too anxious about staying in the lines π

Colouring books are a thing in my house with grandkids the boys like the marvel ones with all the super heros in. My granddaughter has a mermaid one she's working through at the moment.

@Sandy_123 A mermaid colouring book sounds lovely. I bet she can make it very colourful π Yeah my son loved the superhero books. I've never met a child who doesn't like colouring!

@Rachel_Scope she has chicken pox so drew spots on the mermaids yesterday. So they would have them too

Oh my goodness @Sandy_123, that is adorable π
That book sounds great @Biblioklept π Sorry you're struggling with headaches. I hope you can get back to colouring soon.
I'd love to see some of everyone's colouring if you're happy to share a pic? Maybe not the swear words one though!!

I had airplanes model that I hand-painted historically accurately.

That sounds interesting @egister! Any pictures?

π
I've just checked and it is not intended for children with any reading ability but the designs are gorgeous - the reindeer always makes me laugh. I can't reproduce anything but maybe Biblioklept can ?

I do find it interesting that colouring books are a fairly recent innovation in the world of art. Just over 100 years ago isn't all that old when you're thinking about all of history!

I can't share my colouring book, because it has a lot of swears in it. But it's very relaxing. π

Unfortunately, they are far from me.
