Will marriage affect my partners benefits

Me & my partner have been engaged since last year, we was thinking of getting married but my partner is unsure if marriage will affect her benefits, she is on Universal credit & sick benefit for ptsd & sever allergies. we do not live together & wouldn't plan on living together as we have our own reasons for wanting to retain addresses.

Looking for some advice, thanks.

If she is in receipt of PIP then getting married won't have any effect on this. Usually when people get married they live together as a couple and so have to make a joint claim for Universal Credit.

The Department for Work and Pensions counts 2 people as being in a couple if they live in the same household and are:

    • married to each other
    • civil partners of each other
    • living together as if they were married

As you are not going to be living at the same address you are not living in the same household and her existing claim for Universal Credit should continue as it is now. If were to move in together in the future you would need to make a joint claim.

Thanks for that and its not pip shes on but that's what i was thinking aswell. Would i have to inform them before hand so they don't assume we would be living together and stop her money? Cheers

You will not need to inform them If you get married because you will not be living together.

Hey @vikki66, you would think getting married would matter when it comes to benefits but actually the DWP only really cares if you live together! You can be married and not live together and it won't matter to benefits at all.

They might get questions about not living together, but there's no rules as far as I am aware that says they need to or must.

That's not correct. Please make sure you read the comments before advising. Getting married is not a change of circumstances that needs to be reported. Living together is. They are both completely different.
