Council tax

Hi I have just received my diagnosis through for ASD and ADHD and I was wondering if anybody knew about the council tax exemption for SMI severe mental impairment. Would something like count for this? I have spoken to the council but they said I would need something from the GP. I don’t really like going to the doctors so thought I’d ask on here first if anybody has an exemption in place like this?
Many thanks for any help and advice received

Hi @Gemmabelle17. You could get a discount if you or someone you live with is SMI. You would need to get evidence from your GP or other medical professional as proof and check with your local council to see what you're eligible for.
Do you feel you'd be able to go to your GP?

Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it. I could maybe get a telephone appointment with the Gp.
Do you have any idea on the evidence? Would it just be a diagnosis?0 -
No problem 😊 A telephone appointment is a great idea. I'm not entirely sure what they would need. It could just be a letter confirming that you have a SMI. I'd suggest contacting the council again to clarify exactly what they need so you know exactly what to ask for.

For this you'll need a certificate from your GP or any other medical professional in your care saying you are severely mentally impaired. See link for more information.
