50% reduction on car tax, how does this work?

I have just been told that I am entitled to a 50% reduction on my car tax due to my mobility status. I am now waiting for my certificate of entitlement to arrive, but need to know what to do when it arrives. Do I just take the certificate to the post office to tax my car or do I send it to DVLA for re-classification to the car?

    Hi,

For the 50% reduction you cannot take this to a post office and the car does not get reclassified. That process is for the full reduction.

For the 50% reduction you need to post all of the paperwork to the DVLA along with a V10 form. Plus a cheque for half the cost of the tax. Unless your car is already taxed, in which case, they will send you a refund cheque in the post for half of any full months remaining. Sadly you do have to go through the same process every year, and every time you change car. I do not know why they make it so difficult. The full tax reduction process is much easier and lasts indefinitely.

    How to claim

You must include the following with your application:

    • a letter or statement from the Department for Work and Pensions that shows your PIP rate and the dates you’re getting it - if you’re getting PIP
    • an ADP decision letter from Social Security Scotland that shows your mobility component rate and the dates you’re getting it - if you’re getting ADP
    • the vehicle log book (V5C)
    • V10 form
    • evidence of a current MOT, if you need one - for example, a copy of your vehicle’s MOT history or your MOT certificate, if you have one
    • an original goods vehicle testing (GVT) certificate, if you need one
    • a cheque or payable order (made out to ‘DVLA, Swansea’) for 50% of the full rate of car tax for the vehicle
    • an insurance certificate or cover note (if you live in Northern Ireland)

Do not send your PIP assessment or any other medical information with your application.

If you’ve just bought the vehicle and it’s not registered in your name yet, you’ll need to complete a V62 form and include the green ‘new keeper’ slip from the log book with your application.

    Send the documents to:

There's no Certificate Of Entitlement given when you have standard mobility so I'm not sure exactly what you've been sent. This only applies when you have Enhanced mobility.

Instead you need to send a copy of your PIP awards letter to DVLA.
