Hi, my name is PSJ68! What would happen to my UC if I leave my job and move?

hello,
need a bit of help around decision making related to UC job and relocating please…
My partner has just moved from Bristol to Bath . I plan to move in with her, however because of my part time shifts in Bristol which are early starts, there isn’t public transport. So for now I am staying in Bristol which is really hard because of the high amount of rent and bills I pay. So it’s a bit catch 22, once we live together our joint bills will be way less, but I wouldn’t be able to get to work.
What I feel I need to do is leave my job in order to move in and then job search in bath…but what would happen to my UC if I did that?
I do really loathe my job, it’s impacting on my wellbeing … I have ADHD and it’s all very overwhelming..
Advice welcome
Thanks

Have you undergone a work capability assessment with Universal Credit? Are you in any group such as LCW or LCWRA?

Hi Emilee,
I don't think so I have always worked although I only work part time now, not a member of those groups, will check them out.
thanks

Do you work for a national company that could offer you a similar job in another location?
Regarding UC though, are you currently getting some UC or looking to start a new UC claim? If you're on UC now but haven't been awarded LCW/LCWRA then I would expect the work coach to be pushing you to find a job with more hours anyway. There are rules around making yourself 'intentionally unemployed' that can cause problems with UC but it's difficult to advise on that without knowing the full situation.

Hey @PSJ68, welcome to the Scope community 😊 That certainly sounds like a catch22. I have ADHD as well and I know how overwhelming these sorts of decisions can get.
Have work already ruled out being able to change your work hours to enable you to make it to work on time? If you explain to them that it's either changing your work hours or quitting that may have them consider it. Quite a few workplaces would rather retain an employee by moving things around than lose one entirely. If this is something you've already tried and hasn't worked out then I do apologise 😕

Thank you or confirming.
As you are not receiving LCW or LCWRA to leave employment without sanction while claiming UC, you need to be able to demonstrate you had 'good reason' to do so. Unfortunately the specifics of what is considered 'good reason' is not defined, although they do give some examples. It would then be up to a decision maker to decide whether they agree you had good reason.
If you are able to search for work before moving it would be the more straight forward option.
