Housing Benefit Review

They haven't actually increased the rent allowance since 2014 looking at the paperwork I managed to dig out. It seemed to drop when I changed to ESA.

Yes @Catherine21, but I am waiting for them to make a decision on the latest review.
I am not willing to discuss how much I was withdrawing to pay bills on a public forum.

UC has a Housing Element because it is intended to replace Housing Benefit for those of working age.

No problem. We all get things wrong at some point, myself included. There's an awful lot to remember when it comes to benefits.

UC is one benefit that has replaced all other means tested benefits for working age people. These include Tax credits, Income Related ESA/JSA, Income Support and housing benefit. The only benefit that isn't included is Council Tax Reduction and this is paid from your local Authority still.

Hey @whistles, I'm glad the community was able to help! Do let us know if you have anymore questions. If you also wanted to read up a bit more about Universal Credit check out our advice pages: Advice and support | Disability charity Scope UK
There's a lot more there than just information about Universal Credit, so have a little browse.

To me if you are already on one of the legacy benefits they are replacing, you should automatically change to it without having to apply.
When I was moved from IS to ESA I got a letter telling me I had and didn't need to do anything.
However we all know PIP didn't replace DLA because a lot of people didn't qualify anymore.
I don't want to lose my transitional protection if that's still a thing.

When I am ready I will. I was hoping that change wasn't going to be until 2028.
It looks like it's going to be next year.

For those claiming Income Related ESA the migration timeframe is anytime from now up to December 2025.

I don't like the fact it's online.

It doesn't have to be online. You can start your claim through telephone and you will not have access to a journal. If there's any issues with your claim then you would need to ring the helpline.
When you do receive your migration letter Citizens Advice have a help to claim phone line and they will help, support and guide you through the whole process.
Being my daughter's appointee for her UC and managing her claim since 2021, I can tell you that there's been no issues. Having access to a journal makes the claim so much easier.

Thanks. There sn't room in my head for this yet.
I need to sort the rent first.
I will update when I hear the decision.

No need to apologize, it's good to be able to write things down and have people understand what are talking about.
I guess I don't like the idea of being forced to go online when it comes to finances. I don't have a computer.
My other thought at the moment. As I am on the old hb system, whether that will impact how I migrate. But I need my council review decision sorted.

I had a letter about my housing benefit. They are paying for one month.
16 September to 14 October.
It doesnt make any sense because does this mean they haven't made a decision further on.

They've paid up until the day before my review was due which is only three payments instead of four.

What?! room TOO big?
0 -
I have had another letter this morning.
They are deducting £32.50 because my accommodation is too big.
@egister I am on an old system for HB as I didn't trigger a move to the new one. However there has never been a maximum size a room can be.
How can I be taking up too much space, are you meant to be renting a box room or cupboard under the stairs on benefits!?!
1 -
Yes it's shared accommodation, there is no spare room.
I don't get the LHA rate for the area as I didn't trigger a change. So they've been "underpaying" for years, leaving me to top up the difference. I can't make a new claim as that will trigger UC, so will just have to hope that UC is better. (yeah like that's what it's designed for)
The only plus point is I have learnt in regards to my council so this isn't necessarily a blanket rule, that they query anything in your bank in or out that is more than £500.

If you know your neighbour well enough to know what he does with his finances, it suggests you are on friendly enough terms to give them a heads up about the benefits.
I would however try not to discuss other people on a forum.
