My wife (and carer) lives about 140 miles away from her parents with me.

Her mum was rushed into hospital on Wednesday - leaving her dad (aged 96) home alone - we don't think that he can survive on his own - what do we do ?

We can't go up to collect him at the drop of a hat - and he has no other support….

Worried is not the word for what we feel at the moment.

You'd need to phone social services local to him, and raise a safeguarding report.

    But what will they do?

    He won't leave his house

You or your wife clearly can't do anything from where you are, so you flag the situation to those closer who can help.

There are experienced professionals well used to dealing with these kinds of situations.

As you fear he won't survive on his own, they can arrange an urgent welfare check and take things from there.

Sometimes the only thing you can do, is put the situation into the hands of others who can help (speaking from experience).

I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's mum, I hope she recovers well. Age UK recommend calling 111 to ask for advice, unless you think it's an emergency, then you should call 999. Or you can contact the local council in the area where the person lives and raise an 'adult safeguarding' concern. This should be done with the consent of the person wherever possible.

If that's not possible, or you feel that seeking consent would create more risk, then you can contact the council without the consent of the person at risk.

I'm not sure how quickly the council would act. Have you made any contact with him or anyone else since this morning?
