DWP Benefits & Going Abroad

Hi there,

A friend of mine is in receipt of PIP and ESA (I believe support group based). I have already purchased tickets (Christmas Gift) for us to fly abroad internationally over the Christmas/New year period and will be spending around 35 nights away. We will be visiting family and friends. Obviously DWP will be informed beforehand.

I am aware now that ESA allows 28 days out of the country. What I want to know is what happens to the benefit after the 28 days pass? Will their benefit be stopped completely? Will they need to make a reclaim once returning? Or is it just a temporary stoppage until you return to the country and will automatically resume as the next automated payment dates after returning.

Heya @CreedO and welcome to the community. 😊

Unfortunately, after 28 days abroad (they don't count the days you leave and return) benefits will be stopped.

If the claimant is only receiving Contribution Based ESA then the claim is usually suspended if the claimant exceeds the limits. If they are only receiving Income Related ESA then the claim will be closed and as a new claim would be required, this may require a claim for Universal Credit.

If it's Income Related ESA they are claiming and it closes they will not be able to make a new claim for this because it's no longer possible to do that. They will then need to claim Universal Credit.
