Od style esa

We own our home and have no mortgage, husband has a small private pension and state pension. I have old style contribution based esa support group and pip. Everything I read says contribution based is not being migrated but there's nothing out there saying what will happen to it in the future will everyone of working age will be migrated to UC. We do not claim any income related benefits and do not want to.

If you are receiving contribution based only and no income related benefits you will not be migrated to universal credit.

We may know more about Labours benefit plans in the spring budget.

You are correct that CB benefits are not currently being migrated and there are no plans to do so.

No one can predict the future, if you don't wish to claim income benefits then you can't be forced onto UC.

It would you require you to make an application, so you would simply not make the claim, should that eventuality arise.

I read something on another thread saying everyone of working age would be moved onto UC, I am still of working age.

At the moment transfers to UC still only applies to Income Related benefits.

People of working age on CB benefits are not being moved to UC.

No official announcements have been made saying there are any plans to change this.

As I advised even if that changes, you can simply not claim UC.

    The transfer doesn't happen automatically.

I think like many other people in our position we would have to make a claim eventually or sell our home to survive. Upsetting that you get into old age or ill health when you've actually managed to pay for a home yourself, I suppose the other option open would be equity release. I think most of the nation of elderly and disabled are worried sick at the moment and that in turn is affecting health and wellbeing

No they wouldn't if they were in your position because you're not claiming any means tested benefits to migrate to UC.

Your ESA will at some point be reverted to New style ESA but this will be an automatic process and you'll be contacted when I happens. You will need to agree to your commitments, which will be to just agree to report any changes.

Oh thank you so much Poppy, I had no idea. I really don't understand the benefits system or what's happening with all the reforms. I can relax about what happens when or if it's abolished or having to claim UC at all, I will pass on the information to my husband who will be so very relieved too.
