Sticky toffee pudding…bread and butter pudding…jam roly-poly…treacle sponge pudding……are you salivating yet?

We Brits get a bit of flack for our 'bland' food, but we know how to do a tasty pudding.

Types of Puddings

Crumbles

Apple? Rhubarb? Blackberry? What's your favourite crumble filling? Apple crumble became popular during World War II when rationing made it difficult to get flour and sugar.

Sticky Toffee Pudding

The origin of this delicious dark sponge cake with chopped dates and toffee sauce is unclear, however it's believed it was invented in the 20th century in the Lake District. Do you have yours with custard or ice cream?

Jam Roly-Poly

Yummy suet pastry filled with fruity jam, the jam roly-poly is also known as 'dead man's arm' as it was once boiled in a shirt sleeve!

Pudding Facts

  • The Victorians saw pudding as the grand finale of a meal and often set them alight for dramatic effect. I think we should bring this back (maybe with fire extinguishers on hand 😂)
  • The largest Christmas pudding ever weighed over 7,200 pounds! It must have been for a big family.
  • The 'plums' in plum pudding actually refer to raisins.
  • The 'spotted' in Spotted Dick comes from the raisins looking like spots. The Dick seems to come from the shortened Old English name for pudding - puddick.

So, what's your favourite? Do you make your own puddings?

Ohhh puddings, I don't eat them any more, I used to like treacle sponge and custard, rice pudding, crumbles.

Now I stick to greek yogurt and fruit

Bread & butter is top of my list & just thought, I could make a low carb version. So thanks for putting this up, as I wouldn't have thought about it otherwise. Two others I loved, banoffee pie & rhubarb or goosegog crumble. Oh & another, my grandfather's rice pud. 😍

Any type of pudding suits me, especially if rhubarb and gooseberries are involved. I don't make them myself except on the rarest of occasion. I've noticed that no one has mentioned Junket as their fave pudding?! I am lucky because one of my neighbours who lives in the same block has a small catering company. I am always her guinea pig for a new cake creation or homemade soup, chutney and jam. So my sweet tooth is taken care of. She gets lots of orders for Xmas pud and cake so I will be well sorted at Xmas! She makes the best Cheesecake I have ever tasted and what she doesn't know about making a crumble really isn't worth knowing. So thankfully I don't have to be too fussed about making my own puddings. Next time I see her I am going to mention bread and butter pudding in the hope she will get the hint!

I do love a sticky toffee pudding.

A few years ago I would try baking different puddings, one that I had always wanted to try was Sussex Pond Pudding. A suet pudding where the centre it just an entire lemon that you've pricked with holes all around so as the pudding cooks the juices from the lemon permeate throughout it. I don't know if I'd call it a favourite ever but it was fun to make!

Sussex pond pudding recipe - BBC Food (Mary Berry's recipe that also adds apple, for anyone interested. Despite the fruit it is definitely not healthy!)

A tough question! I love apple crumble with cream, the humble rice pudding, pancakes with lemon and sugar or dulce de leche and cream, or sticky toffee pudding.I will be demanding an xmas pud this year too.

Basically I really like pudding. 😆

Just catching up with all your favourite puddings and it's fair to say I'm pretty hungry now 😂

I was hoping that someone would mention Yorkshire puddings, so thanks @noman! Have you ever had one as a sweet?

@durhamjaide2001 that looks delicious! What was it?

I like a sticky toffee pudding but love chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream, although that's not technically British 😉

@Jimm_Scope Sussex Pond Pudding is brilliant. I used to make it back in the day when I had the patience and stamina to make a pud! I got the recipe from a very old cook book.

Another old British pudding (or dessert) is Syllabub. It is a very easy recipe and ideal for Xmas, because on the one hand it is rich and creamy (that is what you want at Xmas), but on the other hand tart and refreshing! In the olden days it was made with mead, but these days it is made with white wine. It lasts for about three days in the fridge before it begins to separate, but once it separates it is still a huge treat.

I love puddings but don’t eat many these days. Trifle, crumble, bread and butter, sticky toffee, spotted dick with sugar and butter - mmmmm

Oh I love syllabub @Steve_in_The_City I've not had that in years!

Another good one, fairly similar is Zabaione served with sponge fingers. Absolutely delicious.

@Albus_Scope I used to make Zabaione but the whipping took quite a bit of effort and chained me to the cooker for too long, so after making it 2 or 3 times I finally gave up!

I don't think anyone has mentioned Steak & Kidney Pudding; it must be one of the glories of British Cuisine.
