Does anyone know if I have to notify anyone and if it will change her pension credit?

    Hi everyone .

My mom has dementia and has recently gone into a serious decline. I’m planning to move her in with me and my husband on the 10th December as she now can’t be left on her own for any length of time. We are having to make adaptations to the room or we’d do it sooner. The enormity of the decision is beginning to dawn on me considering all the people we have to notify and that’s she’s suddenly become incontinent and can barely move. She is currently in a council property and my husband and I own our own home. She gets pension credit and attendance allowance.
Does anyone know if I have to notify anyone and if it will change her pension credit?

Hey @karenlovell62 I'm so sorry to hear about your mum.
I'm afraid I dont have an answer for you as I'm still learning about pension credit, but I just wanted to say hi and let you knw I've split your question off into its own discussion. I hope that's ok?

If she’s claiming housing benefit for help with her rent then you’ll need to report the changes to her local Authority.

If her Pension Credit includes the Severe Disability Premium then she will lose that unless you and your partner are also claiming a qualifying disability benefit or you’re registered blind. Changes must be reported to Pension Credit. Whether this will end her Pension Credit entitlement depends on her circumstances. If you’re not sure then you’ll need to ask them. You need to contact them for a change of address anyway.

So… I’ve reported it to HMRC and although I had to wait 3 hours, it was worth it. My mom gets a premium on her state pension and they said she would lose that, which is just over £80 a week. However, he advised me to call carers allowance. I did that and they said that I now qualify for that and should claim it now to rebalance the weekly income at just over £80. So what mom loses, I gain. Not sure how the system works, but I’ve done as they ask. Thank you for the advice.
