Looking at partner moving in
Hi
I am not sure what to do?? Myself & my partner are looking into the possibility of moving in together. I receive ESA (Income related) work group and my partner is on UC (long term sick).
Am I correct in saying that, we will have to make a joint claim for UC? I have read that only one of us will receive the severe disability part & not both. I feel that we will probably be worse off as we will lose money.
It would be great if anyone has any info that would help me.
Thank you in advance

Yes, you would need to claim UC and then link your claims together.
It's worth considering that two living together in generally cheaper in terms of bills & household running costs than two living apart.
You could try a benefits calculator

Hi @TM24, welcome to the community, I hope you're well today.
Usually, if both of you are found to be in the Limited Capability for Work or Work Related Activity (LCWRA) group, only one person will receive the extra LCWRA amount.
Kimmy's idea of using a benefits calculator would be a good start to see what you'd be entitled to as a couple 😊

Thank you for your replies. I don't want to sound thick, but do I fill in calculator as a fresh claim & that we are on no benefits??

You will lose the Severe disability Premium if you move in with your partner because it doesn't exist when claiming UC. You would fill in the benefits calculator with information from your existing benefits. For yourself, you would tick the work related activity group or Limited capability for work. For your partner if their UC includes the LCWRA (limited capability for work related activity) element then you will need to tick that.
