Postgraduate loan and UC

Hi there,

Just a quick question I am a single mum of 2. Working part-time 2 days a week and I have enrolled to a postgraduate full time course which is a one year course. I have received the maximum loan of £12470 but my tuition fee is £9550 so obviously I won’t have much left from the student loan.
would I be still able to get universal credit monthly?

Many thanks

Hi, I am a undergraduate student and the students loan and tutor fees are 2 different things. So normal the tutor fees are paid directly to the university and the the students finance is paid in 3 separate payments throughout the year but the tutor fees do not come out of your living allowance. As for UC I have appealed to but not sure if I will get anything but I guess like me you can try to see if they will help.

    hi there,

    Thanks for replying.
yeah with postgraduate loan is a bit different. It is paid directly to me and I am gonna have to make a payment to the uni. They do pay in 3 instalments tho but they don’t do maintenance loan like at undergraduate.

    Good luck :)

Hi I believe that you would be able to. I say this because my neice who lives in London was in the same predicament last year and she was entitled to receive universal credit and she too had two daughters the age of 11 years.

I apologise for the rather strange post above, my voice recognition software click submit before I had finished writing! So, what I actually wanted to say is that I'm a current PhD student who receives the format of doctoral loan and, an amount of universal credit each month. So it is possible. What they do, is factor the amount of loan point year as a kind of earnings and then deduct an amount each month, for me is about £130. Obviously if you were working part-time also, that will also be included. Does that help, @Lilla88
