hi. my grandma is currently receiving pension credit and attendance allowance , would she be able to claim carer’s allowance too? she cares for her daughter currently over 35 hours and is wanting to try to claim carer’s allowance too but we are not sure if her other benefits will get reduced because of it. she does not have her own carer so she should be eligible to care for someone else yes? would she be better off financially or they will cut down on other things

Hi @hristiyana2004 - you can't get both the state pension & the full amount of Carer's Allowance, which is £81.90 a week. Also, if your Grandma receives £81.90 a week, or more State pension, then she will be ineligible for this, but if it's less than this, then a Carer's Allowance payment would then make up the difference.

As she's claiming Pension Credit, if her State Pension is more than £81.90 a week she can't get a Carer's Allowance payment, but her Pension Credit will increase.

Her daughter must also be receiving the daily living component of PIP/ADP or middle/high rate of DLA as well as the caring aspect of at least 35 hours a week.

i see thank you. however she only claims pension credit she does not get any state pension in addition to that. Is it still the same outcome?

Hi @hristiyana2004 - sorry I've only just seen your reply. With you saying that your Grandma receives Attendance Allowance, which is for those with a disability who have reached State pension age, & also Pension Credit, I presumed she'd be claiming her state pension?

hi. she only received AA and pension credit - no state pension. as she previously lived in another country she didn’t exactly qualify for state pension and was better off financially with only pension credit.

this is why we are wondering if carer’s allowance would interfere with it as I know state pension can be decreased but is the same outcome with pension credit too?

State pension (SP) is not decreased by carers allowance.(CA) Overlapping benefit rules apply where you can't be paid both at the same time if SP is more than CA but it's not decreased. Yes, she can claim carers allowance but first she needs to check that her daughter isn't claiming Severe disability Premium in another benefit. If she is then claiming carers allowance will stop this.

thanks for the reply. her daughter is not on severe disability premium no. however my grandma is getting a disability premium (not sure about the exact name) from pension credit due to her illnesses and claiming attendance allowance. so I am actually unsure if they will stop paying that for her personally or no?

Claiming CA will not affect her Severe disability Premium.
