Firstly, welcome to Scope. Below, I’ve provided some information that I hope will be helpful to you.
A caution is a formal warning issued by the police when someone admits to committing a minor offence. It is not a criminal conviction but is still recorded in police records. For most jobs, you are not required to disclose a caution unless specifically asked or if the job involves a higher level of background checks. In general, cautions become spent after six months for adults, meaning they will no longer appear on a basic DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check after this time.
There are two main types of DBS checks, the Basic DBS Check, which only shows unspent convictions, and the Enhanced DBS Check, which reveals both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and warnings. While a basic DBS is typically required for general employment, an enhanced DBS is needed for roles that involve working with vulnerable groups or positions requiring a higher level of trust or responsibility. Spent cautions will not appear on a basic DBS check after six months, but they may still be visible on an enhanced check.
Organisations like Unlock and Nacro offer free advice and support to individuals with criminal records who are seeking employment. They provide personalised guidance based on each individual's circumstances, helping people with convictions effectively navigate the job market and secure employment.
