Hello, i need some advice if anyone can help please. my son has suspecteed autism/ADHD he is 13, he has been refered to St Davids for a diagnosis. We have been let down by the school firstly a missed referal to St davids in year 5 after waiting 3 years and chasing this up we realised he was never referred. He was on a PSP, but currently doesnt attend school at all. i feel like he has been strongly let down byt the educational system throughtout his school yeaqrs and im constantly fighting to get him help. Im currently waiting for the school to do an IDP, this has been over 30 days of waiting, aswell as constantly chasing them for work so i can try and homeschool in the meantime. My son is deteriorating dramatically as the days go on, he has been o0ut of school for nearly two months and was promised the IDP last month but still nothing. He can not attened a school that can accomidate his needs without this IDP and have been told once the IDP is done he would need to be on the ALN register for minimum of two school terms. I was thinking of writting to the chair of governors as this is not possible we have been waiting far to long already and he needs a placement now!

His mental health is at crisis point and ive reached out to everry organisation possible for help but waiting lists are so long. i feel he has been strongly let down and he is now sufffering greatly. would anyone have any advice please, do we have to wait two terms on the register before getting a placement in a SEN school? Is it worth writting to the chair of governors as its been over 30 days since i was promised the IDP?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thankyou for reading.

    Hi @souaaziz29

This sounds like a very stressful situation for your and son.

Being on the ALN register should get your son more support and intervention. However, this can vary between schools. Some schools and local authorities recommend two terms when accessing this new support so they are able to see what has went well and what needs to be changed. This sounds like it may be the case for your son.

It is worth writing to the Governors as you are keeping them up to date and letting yours and sons voice be heard. This is also a way of letting the school know that you are not going anywhere and you would like answers and a plan.

I really recommend reaching out to SNAP Cymru about the situation as they are the main education organisation in Wales when it comes to navigating the education system as a parent of a child with additional needs. They have a helpline, booking system for an appointment and online referral form. They are also able to offer free legal education advice, support and information.

    hello,

    thankyou for your comment,

yes i have heard this is the case regarding being on the register for two terms before he is able to attend another school. The ALENCO said hopefully there is a way around this as he is currently not in school at all at the moment and has had these needs for the last 4 years. Hopefully this is the case beacuse we are at crisis point at the moment. I have also reached out to Snap CYMRU already, also family gate way, ALN helpline, Banardos, CAMHS, i think ive tried everything at this point but nothing cvan be done without this IDP. By law the school should have done the IDP within 30 days of identifying his needs which im also waiting for its been 45 days, its been 8 weeks since he left the school and havnt even had any work i have been promised and chasing up daily. As you can imagine we are all very fed up and frustrated!

I have been told to write to the chair of Governors to see if they could help. Would you possibly know how anything about this, i have tried to research but its so confusing.

    thankyou

    Sophia

    Hi again @souaaziz29

Yes it sounds like a very frustrating situation, I can definitely understand why you're feeling fed up!

Do you know your sons school complaints procedure? It may be on the schools website or local council website. Each school has its own procedure for complaints so its good to ask the school for a copy. This should include information on how to contact the Chair of Governors at your son's school and raise a complaint.

This is a template letter that may be helpful to use when writing to them.

I hope this was useful, any other questions or ways the community can support please reach out
