Christmas, the emotional magnifying glass

I have such mixed emotions about this time of year and I saw a cute animated movie on Netflix and really loved this quote from it:
“I always think that Christmas is a bit like an emotional magnifying glass. If you feel loved and happy, Christmas will make you feel even happier and more loved. But if you feel lonely or unloved, the magnifier gets to work and makes all those bad things feel bigger and worse.”

I don't bother with Christmas, so it doesn't make me feel any different.
I decided to make that change about six years ago and it's been lovely.
I couldn't cope with it, so I don't do it. The support I need to manage isn't there so I took charge and stopped trying to make myself fit.

ah my most memorable christmas day a farmer booked me to milk his cows and forgot to inform me he had put a bull in with the herd michael opened the doors and was chased and caught by said bull few broken ribs and missing teeth i think the bull won the good old days i do miss them haha

I think I saw the same film @Biblioklept, was it That Christmas? I found that part quite poignant.
I'm sorry you didn't have the right support @whistles but it's good you found something that works for you.
@michael57, that's quite a Christmas day! How long did it take for you to be able to laugh about it?

🤣🤣🤣 Oh my goodness!! You have lived such a life of adventure!!! 🤣 How did you finally get away from the bull??

you have to stay on your feet safer to get tossed by a bull than fall on the floor and get gored i was a handsome fella back then he thought i was after his ladies haha

If I watch a movie like It's a Wonderful Life I'm bound to get all maudlin and tearful so I avoid it. I still love the Christmas music though.

Wow @michael57 I wouldn't fancy my chances with a bull, we used to walk across a field that had cows in, luckily they were the other side of it, one day I noticed a bull amongst them and we walked the long way

ah the amount of farms i have been on and you see people stroking the pretty little calves and playing with them then 2 years later that same animal weighting almost a ton wants the same treatment its just playing to them

I haven't 'done' Christmas for about 20+ years. I give friends surprise gifts all year, if I see someone struggling, pop some money in an envelope and say as I don't do Christmas this is a random gift to help you out now. It's great to see the shock and receive genuine thanks. People know not to send cards either, I consider them a complete waste of resources and money, trees cut down needlessly, around £2 for a stamp. I look on it, if you can't be kind and thoughtful all year why put stress of buying presents (many end up in charity shop) stress of will my money stretch? I have folk round frequently for a meal, on their own, struggling, whatever. I also do not invite folk who have worked hard or been lucky to have a fair amount of disposable income (most know about my thoughts of Christmas and random meals etc) some donate vouchers as they know I won't take cash. There are some really good folk out there
Last place I lived used to have a free meal on Christmas day for homeless, veterans, folk on their own, folk struggling. Hard work, all of our hall group shared the cooking, cleaning, welcoming, never knew how many would turn up😳 but an excellent day xx

It's definitely like an emotional magnifying glass. Missing people I used to have in my life, but feeling blessed too. We have to look for the positives.

Thats a great way of putting it.....an emotional magnifying glass.
Christmas can be hard and I really feel this year very hard as people just can't afford the extra expense as things are hard money wise. It must be really difficult for people with small children.
There are a lot of good people out there doing their best for everyone and that puts me in a good mood like @teuchterlass

I find Christmas is buying things people want rather than need.
My late friend got me a wheel for my wheelbarrow. It's the most practical useful and great addition to my life. That's what gifts need to be.
Repair something that someone hasnt got the time or resources to do themselves.

Merry Christmas Biblioklept and thank you for this 🎄
"That Christmas" is the name of the film but I haven't seen it.
